Jack Chee

Jack Chee is a Special Counsel in the litigation team in our Sydney office. Admitted in Australia and Hong Kong, he has practised since 2005 and has extensive experience across private practice, in-house legal roles and financial-market regulation.

Jack maintains a broad disputes practice with particular experience in complex commercial litigation and arbitration, corporate and personal insolvency, banking and finance disputes, taxation and revenue matters, and construction disputes.

His experience includes shareholder and partnership disputes, contentious insolvency, debt recovery, multi-jurisdictional asset tracing and recovery, regulatory investigations, employment disputes, class actions and defamation matters.

Jack regularly advises liquidators, trustees in bankruptcy and other insolvency professionals on all aspects of corporate insolvency and personal bankruptcy. He also acts for creditors, investors, trustee companies, directors and other stakeholders at different stages of external administration, restructuring and insolvency-related litigation.

Jack’s taxation and revenue practice encompasses disputes involving the Australian Taxation Office, state revenue authorities and other regulators. His clients include individuals, companies, directors, trustees and property owners.

Taxation disputes frequently intersect with business operations, restructuring, asset protection and insolvency risk. Jack’s combined disputes, insolvency and regulatory experience enables him to assess these overlapping issues and develop practical strategies that take account of both legal exposure and commercial objectives.

Jack also has substantial experience in regulatory compliance, investigations and white-collar matters, particularly those involving financial institutions, listed companies, directors and financial-market professionals.

Before returning to Australia, Jack spent over a decade working in Hong Kong. His experience in Asia included private practice with a leading international law firm and in-house roles with the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission and Hong Kong Stock Exchange. His experience include regulatory compliance, investigations and enforcement matters involving Hong Kong-listed companies, directors and other market participants, frequently with cross-border dimensions involving Mainland China, Australia, the European Union and the United States.

At HKSE, Jack conducted and managed enforcement investigations concerning compliance with the HKSE Listing Rules. A number of those investigations resulted in disciplinary proceedings and sanctions against listed issuers, directors and other responsible parties.

Jack also undertook a secondment to a major Wall Street investment bank in Hong Kong, working with its prime brokerage and litigation teams. More recently, he worked in-house at a leading Australian financial technology and derivatives trading business, where he helped defend a class action involving leveraged contracts for difference and complex financial products. These roles have given him a strong practical understanding of financial services regulation, banking disputes, financial markets and transaction documentation.

From 2014 to 2016, Jack worked at the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission, where he was involved in authorising the first group of funds under the Mainland–Hong Kong Mutual Recognition of Funds scheme. Introduced in 2015, the scheme was an important development in the opening of Mainland China’s financial markets, allowing eligible Hong Kong and Mainland public funds to be offered to retail investors in each other’s market, subject to regulatory approval. Jack remains grateful for the opportunity to have contributed to the scheme during its formative period.

In addition to English, Jack is professionally conversant in Mandarin and Cantonese and is also conversant in Malay and Indonesian.

Education and Admissions

Jack holds a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Finance, a Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Laws from the University of New South Wales. He completed his Master of Laws with distinction, specialising in corporate and commercial law.

Jack was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 2005, entered on the Register of Practitioners of the High Court of Australia in 2009, and was admitted as a solicitor of the High Court of Hong Kong in 2011. He is a member of the Law Society of New South Wales and the Law Society of Hong Kong.

Outside work, Jack enjoys travelling, discovering new hiking trails and spending time on the tennis court with next generation juniors in his family.
